Amazon’s Middle East Data Centers Hit by Drone Strikes, Two Hubs Severely Damaged; Regional Cloud Services Face Lengthy Recovery
Geopolitical conflict damage is rapidly spreading from energy markets to critical digital infrastructure, raising uncertainty for global business operations and supply chains.
Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon’s cloud computing division, has suffered physical infrastructure damage from drone strikes in the Middle East, triggering risks of regional cloud service disruptions and highlighting the direct impact of geopolitical conflicts on critical digital infrastructure.
According to Bloomberg, Amazon stated that recent drone attacks “directly hit” two of its facilities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and damaged infrastructure near one site in Bahrain. The company noted that full recovery is expected to be a lengthy process due to physical damage.
On the service side, Amazon alerted customers to higher error rates and reduced availability. Two of the regional data center hubs “remain severely damaged,” the company said, while a third hub is operating normally—though some services have been indirectly affected due to their reliance on the damaged hubs.
For markets, the incident further amplifies the economic spillover from the conflict. Bloomberg reported that the unrest has shaken multiple parts of the Middle East and already spilled over into global energy markets, sending oil prices soaring. Tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has nearly stalled due to security risks, with rising uncertainty for the regional business environment.
## Damaged Facilities Confirmed: Two Hubs “Still Severely Damaged”
Amazon said on Tuesday that two of its three regional data center hubs “remain severely damaged.” The third hub is currently operational, but “some services have been indirectly impacted due to dependencies on the affected hubs.”
Amazon disclosed for the first time that drones “directly struck” two facilities in the UAE. In Bahrain, a drone attack near one site damaged related infrastructure, the company reported.
## Recovery Expected to Be Prolonged; Customers Advised to Back Up and Migrate Workloads
Amazon stated it is working to restore full service availability as quickly as possible, but recovery will be extended given the nature of the physical damage. Customers are currently experiencing elevated error rates and degraded availability.
As a mitigation measure, Amazon recommended that Middle East customers back up data and potentially migrate workloads to other AWS Regions. Amazon operates 39 Regions and 123 Availability Zones globally, it added.
## Conflict Spillover Raises Operational Uncertainty, Impact Spreads from Energy Markets to Business Operations
Amazon noted that even as repairs proceed, ongoing regional conflict means the overall operating environment in the Middle East “remains unpredictable.” The company declined further comment beyond its public statements.
Bloomberg reported that the conflict has expanded geographically, with explosions heard across Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE.
Economic shocks have already spread to global energy markets, pushing oil higher and nearly halting tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Combined with cloud service disruption risks, businesses and investors are increasingly focused on regional supply chain and operational continuity.
