Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu says he had been tracked for weeks and warns of more military operations to come. The Israeli military threatens to hunt down Iran’s new Supreme Leader, while Iran has activated contingency plans for key positions.
In an official statement released in the early hours of March 18 local time, Iranian President Pezeshkian mourned the death of Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and former Parliament Speaker, who was killed in a recent terrorist attack.
Pezeshkian highly praised Larijani’s outstanding contributions, stressing that his death was an “irreparable and immense loss” for the Islamic Republic of Iran.
He emphasized that despite Larijani’s assassination, Iran would continue to adhere to its resistance path based on “reason and foresight.”
According to Iranian sources, Larijani and his son Morteza Larijani were killed in an attack at his daughter’s home in Pardis, while his deputy Alireza Bayat was also killed.
The New York Times reported that Larijani and his son’s funeral would be held on March 18.
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said in a speech on March 17 local time that Larijani had been killed. Israeli forces carried out an airstrike in the Iranian capital Tehran in the early hours of that day. Israel had reportedly tracked Larijani for weeks after the alleged assassination attempt on Ali Khamenei.
Netanyahu also claimed that Soleimani, a commander of the Basij militia, had been killed. He added that recent military operations were weakening Iran and that there would be more “surprises” ahead.
### Israeli military threatens to hunt down Iran’s new Supreme Leader
Israeli military spokesman Efi Devlin said on March 17 that the Israeli military would “hunt down” Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
In an interview the same day, Devlin stated that the Israeli military was targeting “all leaders” of Iran and would pursue and eliminate Mojtaba Khamenei.
Earlier that day, Iran’s Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali said via social media that reports of Mojtaba Khamenei receiving medical treatment in Russia were false, describing the disinformation as “a new psychological warfare.”
### Iran names multiple successors for key state positions
According to Xinhua News Agency, citing Iran’s Fars News Agency, Iran has pre‑designated between 3 and 7 successors for all key government and military commanders to ensure continuity of core state functions in emergencies.
The source stated that this proactive personnel arrangement was designed to guarantee that state administration and defensive operations would not be interrupted under any sudden circumstances.
The source also noted that the United States and Israel no longer concealed their assassination operations and had even begun to openly flaunt their terrorist acts.
