"Ceasefire expectations" bankrupt? US and Israel bomb Iran's Isfahan energy facilities again

Just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a five‑day pause on strikes against Iran’s energy infrastructure on Tuesday, a joint U.S.–Israeli coalition launched airstrikes targeting natural‑gas facilities in Iran’s Isfahan and Khorramshahr. The Isfahan pressure‑reduction station avoided a massive explosion due to an early shutdown, but suffered severe infrastructure damage. Combined with prior attacks on the South Pars gas field and the Natanz nuclear facility, Iran has threatened reciprocal strikes on U.S. military bases and Israel’s energy hubs.

Despite Trump’s announcement of a five‑day delay in targeting Iran’s energy network, multiple critical Iranian energy nodes were hit by airstrikes on Tuesday.

According to local media reports, in the early hours of March 24 local time, two energy facilities in Isfahan and Khorramshahr came under U.S.–Israeli attack.

Details show that in northern Isfahan, on Kaveh Street, a natural‑gas management building and a pressure‑reduction station were struck, causing partial damage to the facilities and affecting nearby residential buildings. The report notes that Iran’s pre‑emptive security measures—taking the station offline before the attack—“prevented a massive explosion.”

On the same day, a regional official in Khorramshahr confirmed that a missile hit the perimeter of the city’s natural‑gas pipeline station. “There are no reports of casualties, and energy supplies remain uninterrupted,” the official stated.

As reported by CCTV on March 23, Trump said he had held talks with Iran and would suspend strikes on its energy facilities for five days. “The U.S. and Iran had very good and productive talks over the past two days,” he said.

## Iran’s energy and nuclear facilities repeatedly targeted by U.S.–Israeli strikes

This is not the first recent asymmetric strike by the U.S. and Israel.

As previously reported by Xinhua News Agency, Iranian President Pezeshkian strongly condemned U.S. and Israeli attacks on petrochemical facilities in South Pars and Assaluyeh, Bushehr Province, on March 18. A statement from Iran’s National Gas Company said the attacks damaged parts of the South Pars gas field; although fires were extinguished and production continued, Pezeshkian warned: “Such aggression will only complicate the situation, with consequences that could reverberate globally.”

Meanwhile, nuclear‑safety risks remain unresolved. According to People’s Daily on March 21, Iran’s main uranium‑enrichment site, the Natanz nuclear facility, was attacked. Iran said in a statement this was “the second attack on the nuclear facility since the first week of the war.” While current radiation monitoring shows “no leaks and no impact on nearby residents,” news that the U.S. is developing a strategy to seize Iran’s “nuclear stockpile” has further heightened market risk aversion.

## Iran’s retaliation: targeting Middle Eastern energy hubs

As its energy facilities continue to be damaged, Iran’s retaliatory rhetoric has grown increasingly specific.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has publicly stated that if Iranian power plants sustain further damage, critical infrastructure across the Middle East could face “irreversible destruction.”

Warnings from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) are more targeted. As reported by CCTV, IRGC Navy Commander Alireza Tangsiri previously said that U.S.-linked oil facilities would be treated as “on the same level” as U.S. military bases and would face fierce attacks. The IRGC has explicitly warned that retaliation will target Israeli power plants and all facilities supplying electricity to U.S. military bases in the region.
