Iranian officials: Plans to implement stricter admission and fee system for ships passing through Strait of Hormuz

# CCTV News

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, revealed that Iran plans to establish a brand-new management system for the strait, modeled after Turkey’s governance of the Bosphorus and Egypt’s control of the Suez Canal. Under the plan, vessels passing through the strait will be required to obtain permission from Iranian authorities and pay corresponding transit and service fees.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly, stated on local time March 30 that in light of the current international security situation and external threats, Iran is seriously considering withdrawing from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and plans to impose stricter access and toll systems on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

Boroujerdi said that while Iran has fulfilled its obligations under the NPT, its legitimate security interests have not been effectively guaranteed. As a result, Iran’s parliament is actively advancing relevant legislation to study the possibility of formally exiting the treaty. He emphasized that in the face of external military threats and unfair treatment, Iran will take all necessary measures to safeguard national security.

Boroujerdi also stated that Iran currently holds full control over the strategic waterway of the Strait of Hormuz. He revealed that Iran intends to set up a new regulatory framework for the strait, drawing on the models adopted by Turkey for the Bosphorus and Egypt for the Suez Canal. Vessels transiting the strait must secure approval from Iran and pay relevant passage and service charges.

According to Boroujerdi, Iran has incurred massive costs over the past few decades to maintain security in the strait and will recover these expenditures through institutionalized measures while strengthening oversight of the shipping lane. He noted that as relevant bills progress through parliament, ships without authorization from the Iranian government will no longer enjoy freedom of navigation in this vital waterway.
