Keep an eye out for this Friday! U.S. Supreme Court may rule on tariffs

The U.S. Supreme Court has scheduled Friday as an opinion release date, meaning the high court may issue a ruling on the legality of President Trump’s global tariff policy that day.

The U.S. Supreme Court has set this Friday (January 9) as a judgment announcement date, marking the first possible time the court will rule on President Donald Trump’s global tariff measures.

According to CCTV News, on January 6 local time, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that it will deliver a ruling on the tariff issue this Friday (January 9).

After taking office in January 2025, the Trump administration invoked the *International Emergency Economic Powers Act* to impose a series of tariff hikes via executive orders without congressional approval. Following rulings by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Court of International Trade that the administration’s sweeping tariff policy was unlawful, the Trump administration appealed to the Supreme Court, where the case is currently pending. It is reported that the Trump administration has formulated a contingency plan to reimpose import tariffs if the ruling goes against it.

The Supreme Court never pre-announces which cases are ready for ruling, only stating that decisions on concluded cases may be released when the justices take the bench at 10:00 a.m. Washington time. Given that the court previously fast-tracked this case, the likelihood of a ruling on the tariff dispute is substantial.

A ruling against Trump on the tariff issue would weaken his signature economic policy and constitute the biggest legal setback of his return to the White House. The crux of the controversy lies in Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff policy announced on April 2, which imposes tariffs ranging from 10% to 50% on most imported goods.

Trump told House Republicans on Tuesday:

> “We have a major Supreme Court case. I hope they do what’s good for the country. I hope they make the right decision. A president must have the ability to negotiate and maneuver on tariffs.”

During oral arguments on November 5, the justices appeared skeptical of Trump’s authority to impose these tariffs under a 1977 law that grants the president special powers in emergencies.

The court may also issue a ruling on a major redistricting case, a decision that could help the Republican Party maintain control of Congress in this year’s midterm elections. The court is weighing whether to significantly restrict the application of the *Voting Rights Act* to reduce the creation of districts dominated by Black or Hispanic voters.

The court’s website released this announcement shortly after the justices concluded a four-week recess.

Additional judgment announcement dates may be scheduled by the justices within the next two weeks. On January 21, the court will also hear a case involving Trump’s attempt to dismiss Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook over allegations of mortgage fraud, which she has denied.
