OpenAI enters "AI medical care": ChatGPT Health analyzes test results and provides diet and exercise guidance

Data from OpenAI shows that over 230 million people ask health and wellness questions on the company’s platform every week, highlighting the enormous scale of demand in the healthcare market. The newly launched ChatGPT Health aims to help users address daily health concerns, and make ChatGPT’s responses more relevant by integrating users’ personal health information.
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health on Wednesday, allowing users to securely connect their medical records and health apps to this AI chatbot. This marks the AI startup’s official foray into the healthcare sector, as it seeks to transform ChatGPT into a "personal super assistant" that covers all aspects of users’ lives.
According to OpenAI data, more than 230 million people pose health and wellness-related queries on its platform each week, underscoring the massive demand in the healthcare market. Importantly, the newly introduced ChatGPT Health is **not intended for diagnosis or treatment, nor can it replace medical care**. Instead, it is designed to assist users with everyday health issues, and enhance the relevance of ChatGPT’s responses by incorporating users’ own health data.
ChatGPT Health will feature a dedicated space within the chatbot, where all files, conversations and connected apps will be stored separately from other chat history. OpenAI has pledged that these conversations will **not be used to train its foundational models**, and that the information and memory within the health space will not be shared externally.
The feature will first be rolled out to a small group of early users to gather feedback, with broader access to be expanded in the coming weeks. OpenAI has partnered with b.well, a provider of health data connectivity infrastructure. Users can also link services including Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers and Function, a startup specializing in laboratory testing.
## Dedicated Health Space Protects Privacy
ChatGPT Health creates a specialized, isolated zone within the chatbot, segregating health-related conversations from users’ other chat content. If a user initiates a health-related discussion outside the health section, the AI will prompt them to switch to the dedicated health space.
This design ensures that users’ health backgrounds do not surface in standard conversations. That said, the AI within the health section may reference content that users have discussed in the standard ChatGPT experience. For example, if a user has previously asked ChatGPT for a marathon training plan, the AI will recognize the user’s identity as a runner when they discuss fitness goals in the health section.
Fidji Simo, CEO of OpenAI’s Applications business, stated in a Substack post that ChatGPT Health represents another step toward evolving ChatGPT into a personal super assistant, one that can provide informational and tool support for any aspect of users’ lives.
## Integrating Multiple Health Data Sources
Through its collaboration with b.well, ChatGPT Health gains access to health data connectivity infrastructure, enabling users to share their medical records. Users can link various services via the tools or apps section in the settings menu.
Available data sources for connection include Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers and Function, the lab testing startup. OpenAI noted that the product was developed in "close collaboration with physicians".
The company emphasized that conversations within ChatGPT Health will not be used to train its foundational models, and all health information will be stored and protected separately.
## Deepening Healthcare Sector Footprint
OpenAI has stepped up its efforts in the healthcare space in recent months. After launching the GPT-5 model last August, CEO Sam Altman told CNBC that healthcare "is probably the category where we’ve seen the most dramatic improvements".
Last May, the company released a benchmark called Health Bench, designed to measure the performance of AI models in real-world health scenarios.
In a blog post, Fidji Simo described ChatGPT Health as a response to the flaws in the existing healthcare system, including high costs and barriers to access, overbooked doctor’s appointments and lack of continuity of care.
Nevertheless, OpenAI explicitly states in its terms of service that the product "is not suitable for the diagnosis or treatment of any health condition". Large language models operate by predicting the most likely response rather than the most accurate answer, and are prone to generating hallucinations—posing new challenges for using AI chatbots to obtain medical advice.
